There’s a misconception that going green or living in a more sustainable way is hard. That it requires a great amount of sacrifice and effort. The fact of the matter is that there are many ways you can go green without even trying! It’s really not hard, inconvenient, or expensive to green your lifestyle! Here are 5 ways you can go green that you can do with no added effort or expense on your part.
1. Don’t Litter
The thing that I always wonder when I see litter somewhere, is why? Do people throw trash on the ground in their home? I doubt that very much! So why would they just throw it on the ground when they are not in their homes? It’s very simple, if you have trash and you are not at home, put it in an appropriate trash or recycling receptacle. If you don’t find one on your travels, then hang on to the items you wish to discard until you get home. It’s literally that easy.
2. Turn it Off
Ask your self: Are you in this room? Does having those lights on serve any purpose? Are you using this item? If the answer is no, then turn it off. It not only saves resources, it saves you money.
3. Buy Less
Do you really need that new item? Or do you just want it? There is a difference, learning to tell the difference between the items you legitimately need and those you want will help you make smarter purchasing decisions. Buy purchasing less you will not only save money, but put less strain on the resources that go into making those items.
4. Reuse It
Can you reuse that item? Old t-shirts and fabric scraps make great cleaning cloths for dusting or taking on other household chores. Why spend money on those things when you can re-purpose things you no longer need, have outgrown, or have become unusable in their original purpose? You know the old adage “waste not want not”? It applies today more than ever.
5. Use Reusable Bags
You know those plastic bags they give you at the store? How you can only fit 5 things in them and they break if you look at them wrong? You end up with about a million extra bags when you get home that you don’t really have a use for because you can only fit 5 things in them at a time and you have to double or triple bag everything anyway. Skip the hassle! Use reusable bags! You can often buy them at your local stores, and many stores will give you a per bag discount each time you use them. These bags hold much more than the thin plastic bags and used for years to come. (Plus some have awesome features, like I have one that has a special strap that holds your milk or soda bottles up so it won’t smoosh your smooshables and one that folds up into its own tiny bag so that it fits in your purse or attached to your bag or belt with a carabiner.)
Making your lifestyle a little more Eco-friendly doesn’t have to be expensive or a hardship. It starts with tiny steps we can all take in our every day lives.
