The Marine Corps Birthday Ball is right around the corner. The time to get ready is now! You’ve got the dress, the shoes and the accessories, but wait! That’s not all you need! Be prepared for any fiasco that may come your way at the ball from wardrobe malfunctions to sudden headaches to blisters, all the perils of any formal event. Don’t leave home without these must have items in your purse.
Pain Relievers & Stomach Soothers
Sudden headache? Feet are killing you? Bash your knee less than gracefully on the table or take a spill walking up the stairs in your 3″ heels? Appetizers not agreeing with you? Yeah, it happens. That’s why you need to have your pain reliever of choice and favorite stomach soother on hand. This is especially important, if like me, you are a frequent headache sufferer! Bring your migraine medicine! Nothing kills the ball faster than a sudden onset migraine! Even if you don’t need it, maybe someone else will. Be the hero that saves the day and has the headache killing medicine your friends need.
Blisters happen. Stubbed toes happen. So have a some bandages on hand to take care of it. If you know your shoes always rub in a certain place you may also want to preemptively put a bandage where it rubs. The best blister is the one that never happens.
Travel Sewing Kit
Wardrobe malfunctions happen. Maybe it’s a broken strap, a slipping gown, or the ever dreaded split pants. A travel sewing kit will have everything you need to make a quick fix and get back to enjoying the ball. Safety pins are a must, and double-sided tape would be nice to have on hand as well. You never know what will happen, so be ready to avoid any embarrassing wardrobe malfunctions.
Protip: Near a Daiso? They have adorable travel sewing kits for cheap! Because everything is better with an adorable cat on it.
Feminine Hygiene Products
Has this ever happened to you? You are all ready for your beach vacation/wedding/formal event/long plane/car ride, when BAM! SUDDEN PERIOD! It’s like it knows. So be prepared, even if you think you won’t need it, it’s always better to have on hand, just in case. Because we’ve all been there, it’s not fun. So keep your essentials on hand and ready to go, just in case.
While running from the warm car to the hotel where the ball is being held in your strapless dress in the 40 degree weather is exhilarating, you probably would prefer not to be shivering cold upon arrival. Or for some reason, even though it’s 40 degrees out the venue still has the AC on and you of course, are seated right below the vent. So be prepared, bring a scarf or wrap or formal sort of coat (heck if it’s cold and snowy wear the winter coat, don’t worry about being fashionable, it’s the Vermonter way for formal winter events). It’s better to have the warm scarf you don’t need, than sit shivering through the whole ball.
Cash & ID
It will vary by ball, but chances are you may end up paying for drinks at the bar or needing to tip someone. Always have some cash on hand, just in case you need it. This is especially important if you will be getting pictures done at the ball, usually the photographer requires you pay in cash. Be sure to have your ID on you! I always bring my driver’s license and my military ID. Just in case I get carded, or need it, like you know, to get back onto base after the ball.
Makeup for Touch Ups
Are you picture ready? Hang on, better touch up that makeup first! I usually only bring my lipstick as it’s the one thing I know I’ll have to touch up. Bring any makeup you think you might need to touch up. Whatever your routine calls for.
The Marine Corps Birthday Ball is a great event, make sure it stays that why by being prepared for the usual menaces of any formal event. A little preparation now will keep you having fun all evening.
