We are constantly bombarded by stress. Maybe its drama in your circle of friends or family, a disturbing new news report, surprise orders, or the dreaded deployment curse. Is there no way to overcome this stress? Yes. The best way to overcome the daily stress we all face in our lives is by practicing good self-care. We all need to take time out to recharge our own batteries for once, not just look after everyone else. So the next time you feel overwhelmed, and need to recharge your batteries try one of these practices.
Practice yoga, hit the gym, or simply go for a walk outside. We can spend so much time just sitting around or being online (guilty as charged!) that simply getting up, out of the house, and doing something physical with our bodies can be all we need to feel recharged and rejuvenated. If you can get out into nature, even if it’s just your small local park, or your tiny garden. Being around nature can help improve your mood all on its own, don’t believe me, it’s science!
Fika is a Swedish term for a coffee break. It’s a time to take break, relax by yourself or with friends, drink some coffee or tea, and maybe enjoy a pastry or two. It is a nice break in your day to just relax and focus on yourself or your friends. No work, no worries just a nice warm cup to help melt your troubles away. It doesn’t need to be fancy, you can have a nice fika right in your own home or run to your favorite local coffee shop for an extra treat.
Does a nice hot bath, with rose scented bath salts sound divine right about now? Maybe with a few candles to set the mood and some relaxing music? Forge some time for yourself from your busy schedule and make some time to take care of yourself. Instead of your usual shower routine, draw yourself a nice hot bath and pull out those bath salts you got as a gift several holidays ago. Or give yourself a nice facial or do your nails. You know what you need best, take the time to pamper yourself just for a little while.
I know, I know, “But all my friends/family are online!” Yes me too. But sometimes going offline is the best thing we can do for ourselves. Take just 24 hours and put the smart phone away. Only use it for making phone calls. Leave the email, and stay off Facebook. Ignore the notifications and just enjoy the real world, the offline world. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the constant barrage of information we see every day on social media and the internet. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is just let it go for a while. Instead focus on the here & now. Your offline, real life friends & family. I hear they are nice people.
Help Someone Else
Sometimes we get overwhelmed because we can’t see beyond our own problems, or feel helpless in a world that seems all to cold. It doesn’t have to be that way. You can take action to help others and make the world a slightly better place. Maybe that means volunteering on base or in your local community. Or maybe it simply means picking up litter on your daily walk around the neighborhood or at the park. Instead of feeling helpless, take action. Every action, even small ones matter and can change the world.
Put on the head phones, turn up your favorite music and just rock your cares away. Dance if you feel so inclined (no one is watching and if they are, who cares!) or go for a ride in the car with the tunes rocking. Sometimes all we need is some loud music catharsis to give us permission to deal with our feelings and work through them.
We all face stress in our daily lives, but that doesn’t have to mean we have to let it get to us. In order to live our best, most fulfilling lives we need to take care of ourselves, just as much as we need to take care of the others in our lives. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive, or time-consuming. These 6 ways to help overcome your stress are easy to do and most are free or nearly free.
