Waiting on orders.
Waiting for deployment to end.
Waiting for housing.
Waiting on ALL THE THINGS. Does it ever end? Is military life only one long hurry up and wait? It certainly can seem that way
all the time sometimes. How do you keep your sanity while waiting for an undetermined period of time for things to change in an unexpected way only to end up waiting again?
Wait what? Is there some way to bypass all the waiting of military life that is being kept secret? Sadly no (unless there is, in which case comment in the comments and let everyone else in on your super awesome secret). However, you don’t have to spend all your time waiting. I mean, what’s wrong with the present moment? Okay, I mean maybe you hate your duty station, are going mad living in the hotel, miss your husband like CRAZY, and could it be any hotter?! Let’s ignore that for a moment, there is also a lot of cool stuff going on right now in the present. If all you are concerned with is always the future you’re going to miss some pretty awesome stuff that’s going on right this very second.
So how do you skip the waiting periods of military life?
Live in the moment.
Live fully in the moment, embrace every single second of it. Live it like you are meant to live for this one second only. You won’t get this time back, don’t waste it thinking of what might never be. Bring your attention to the present moment.
It sounds great, right? Ideal even. It’s hard. I certainly am as guilty as anyone else when it comes to playing the what if game and future-dreaming. When I do that, I miss the things going on right now. What about you? Are you missing the little things happening right now, as you yearn for the future?
Take a moment.
Just stop, stop reading for one second. Notice what’s going on around you. Hear the hum of your computer, notice how the light falls in the room around you, hear the fragments of others conversations or the silence of the room around you. Notice your pet’s soft breathing, the bird flying outside, or the soft rustling of the leaves on the trees. You are sitting here, reading this for no other reason than you wanted to. Relish that. Right now, you aren’t running around doing something you hate. You are here, because you want to be. Taking a small bit of time from your day to do something you enjoy. How awesome is that? How many days have you wished for that? Just the free time to do one thing for yourself?
Your life is going by, yes, even now. You’ll never know until it’s far too late when you look back and realize that this time, maybe even right now brought you so much. So take a moment, and stop waiting in your military life. Stop the endless cycle of hurry up and wait. Instead start the cycle of living your life fully in every second of the day. Embrace the small things, the tiny moments that make up your day and notice them. Your waiting, your dreaming or worrying of the future won’t change it. So instead enjoy what you have now. Who knows what the future holds, future you may look back fondly at this moment that you would have otherwise overlooked.
